The Connected Intersections (CI) Committee is pleased to announce the publication of the Connected Intersections (CI) Validation Report, formally catalogued as Connected Transportation Interoperability (CTI 4502 v01.00). This CI Validation Report summarizes findings from the validation phase of the Connected Intersections Project, which include data collection, analysis, and feedback received from validation sites between the months of April and September of 2021.

The CI Project Committee developed CTI 4502 v01.00 with broad stakeholder representation from the standards development organizations (including the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), and SAE International), ITS infrastructure owner operators (IOOs), automotive original equipment manufacturers and suppliers, infrastructure equipment vendors, security specialists, ITS integrators, and end-users of data and services. Funding support and leadership for the CI Project Committee was provided from the United States Department of ITS Joint Program Office and the Federal Highway Administration Office of Operations Research and Development.

The performance and completion of the validation phase would not have been possible without the leadership and participation of a diverse group of 10 Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) deployment sites, two universities, and one industry member. The 13 participating organizations who offered a total of 15 sites, including one in Canada, are: California Department of Transportation (Caltrans); City & County of Denver, Colorado; City of Anaheim, CA; Clark County, WA; City of Columbus and City of Dublin, DriveOhio; Florida Department of Transportation; Georgia Department of Transportation; Maricopa County Department of Transportation; Panasonic Corporation of North America; Port of San Diego Sustainable Freight Demonstration, CA; University of Alberta; University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute; and Utah Department of Transportation.

Each organization voluntarily collected and provided SPaT/MAP messages from their sites for verification of conformance to a draft CI Implementation Guide, which was also developed by the CI Committee. The CI Implementation Guide is a detailed interface specification that can be used by the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) community to deploy a nationally interoperable, openly available broadcast of traffic controller Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) and associated required roadway intersection geometry mapping (“MAP”) information that can be received by connected vehicles and other interested participants in the transportation system.

The CI Validation Report provides an overview of the validation sites that volunteered to participate in the validation phase, an overview of the logging and analysis process, summary findings, and information received from the validation sites based on questionnaires. Each validation site provided feedback on the usefulness of the CI Implementation Guide and any ambiguities in the guidance. Details on security implementations were also surveyed. Some of the analysis results and feedback received during the validation phase resulted in updates to the guidance that are reflected in the published CI Implementation Guide (CTI 4501 v01.00).
