ITE Partnerships

One of the important, though mostly behind-the-scenes, roles performed by ITE technical staff is partnering with other associations and organizations. Members of the ITE technical staff maintain relationships and participate in specific technical initiatives with dozens of these groups. One purpose of these partnerships is to stay abreast of what is happening, learn what is important to other segments of the transportation stakeholder community, and share those issues with our members. But a more significant purpose of
these relationships is to actively collaborate with those organizations to produce products and services for the benefit of ITE members—products and services that are better than what could be produced by ITE working alone.

A prime example of these partnerships is the work completed over the past year with the National Parking Association (NPA) on developing the ITE Parking Generation Manual, 5th Edition, which is covered beginning on page 31 in this issue. Working with NPA on this product extended the reach of ITE data collection efforts and helped ensure that the material on shared parking facilities would be both relevant to ITE members and consistent with the updated Shared Parking publication being developed by NPA. In 2018, ITE also worked closely with the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) on the Curbside Management Practitioners Guide, and with the Vision Zero Network (VZN) on Vision Zero Core Principles, both released in November 2018.

ITE has longstanding partnerships with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) related to our work to support the National Operations Center of Excellence, the Vehicle to Infrastructure Deployment Coalition, and the Roadway Transportation Systems Cybersecurity Framework (the latter item also includes both NACTO and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association [NEMA]). ITE is a member of steering committees for both the 800+ member Road to Zero Coalition led by the National Safety Council, as well as the National Complete Streets Coalition led by Smart Growth America. Representatives of VZN, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and SAE International serve on the steering committee for ITE’s Vision Zero initiative and representatives of the American Public Health Association, America Walks, the International Professional Association for Transport and Health (IPATH), and the Centers for Disease Control serve on ITE’s Transportation and Health Task Force.

ITE also works closely with NEMA, SAE International, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) on ITS standards and other activities. ITE is an active member of the Transportation Research Board’s Forum on Autonomous Vehicles and Shared Mobility, and ITE is a sponsor and provides a 16-person delegation of volunteer subject matter experts to the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

These are just a few of our active partnerships that help advance the mission of ITE. While establishing and maintaining these partnerships is hard work, it helps ensure that the products and services produced for ITE members are as relevant as possible to what is happening in the transportation profession today.
