October 2025 ITE Journal President's Message: Rewarding Leadership

At the Orlando meeting, I had the honor of giving opening remarks. In this ITE Journal column, I’d like to again reflect on leadership within ITE—what it means, why it matters, and why stepping up is so rewarding.

Serving as your International President has given me a front row seat to the passion and dedication of our members. I’ve seen firsthand how we rally around bold ideas, especially through initiatives like our Safety Roadmap and Action Plan. What began as a strategic framework has evolved into a grassroots movement. Districts have taken ownership, forming committees and driving real change in their communities. It’s inspiring to witness strategy turn into action, and action into impact.

This year, I attended four Student Leadership Summits, and the energy in those rooms was electric. Students gathered, eager to explore career paths and connect with mentors. These students already seem to know where they’re headed, and that’s a testament to the strength of our mentorship programs and the example set by our seasoned professionals.

In Orlando, I participated in a panel on negotiations—covering everything from contracts and budgets to stakeholder engagement. One of the most important negotiations is internal: “If I invest in ITE leadership, what will I gain?” I can answer that with confidence—I’ve lived it. For example, serving on the International Board led to an unforgettable experience in Auckland, New Zealand, where my family was hosted by an ITE colleague’s family. From hidden beaches to Pavlova desserts and conversations about the USA’s dangerous wildlife, it was a cultural exchange rooted in shared professional values.

My work on the STEM committee brought a different kind of joy. I recently received photos of elementary students participating in our snowplow activity—clearing shaving cream “snow” in the correct sequence. Their smiles and enthusiasm reminded me that inspiring the next generation is one of the most meaningful outcomes of our outreach.

People often ask if the travel has been exhausting. My answer? It’s been an adventure. At TexITE in Austin, I reconnected with my graduate advisor, who told me he was proud of me—a moment that meant more than any award. In Memphis, I played host to board colleagues from Canada and Australia, introducing them to American barbecue. In Annapolis, I admired handmade thank-you cards from students touched by our STEM efforts.

In Halifax, I joined ITE Canada’s morning running group, racing up the historic Citadel and bonding with members from coast to coast. In Santa Fe, I explored the original Meow Wolf exhibit. In Indianapolis, I stood on the court where the NBA Finals would soon tip off. And in Long Beach, I joined a scavenger hunt aboard the Queen Mary—my team may have come in last, but the experience was unforgettable.

These moments, big and small, are the true rewards of leadership. So here’s my challenge to you: if you’ve ever thought about leading a Committee, chairing a meeting, or launching a new Chapter, start by negotiating with yourself. Consider the time you can give and the value you might receive—new friendships, fresh insights, a chance to shape policy, and stories you’ll carry with you forever. Whether you run for office, organize a webinar, or mentor a student, your voice and perspective matter. ITE thrives because of members like you.
