I am pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) has selected ITE to provide program support, outreach, administration, and execution of the annual National Rural ITS (NRITS) Conference and Rural ITS Group meetings. The NRITS Conference will be held as a stand-alone conference in 2018 and incorporated into the 2019 ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit being held in Texas.
I'm proud that ITE was chosen to support and manage the NRITS Conference and work with the Technical Group. I believe ITE is well positioned to assist the ITS JPO in furthering its goals of disseminating a wide range of resources and subject matter content on rural and small community ITS technologies and applications. While the annual NRITS conference will provide the focal point for these efforts, ITE plans to broadly distribute the resources developed through a variety of communication channels to our more than 14,000 members and our extended network of contacts through peer associations. This new relationship will also enrich ITE as we form new partnerships and relationships through facilitation of the Rural ITS Group activities. I hope these efforts will further promote inter-disciplinary, interagency, and interjurisdictional coordination and cooperation in advancing small community and rural ITS deployment.
USDOT ITS JPO has sponsored the NRITS Conference for the past 25 years to promote the use of ITS to address the challenges facing rural communities. The annual NRITS Conference provides participants an opportunity to network and share experiences within and across a wide variety of ITS disciplines. The event brings together both traditional and non-traditional ITS users to address such issues as rural mobility, safety, multi-agency coordination, and workforce development, as well as EMS, commercial vehicles, and transit issues.
The Rural ITS Group, advances a mission to assist the rural transportation community in addressing transportation-related issues affecting non-urbanized areas. The Rural ITS Group provides a forum for transportation agencies and practitioners that apply, operate, and maintain ITS in rural America.
