Guest bedrooms are largely ignored because people are scared it will cost too much to make them attractive. A little creativity can go a long way toward making a small budget stretch to make a guest bedroom a centerpiece.

With a good vision, some physical effort and a little inspiration, your guest bedroom will be the best in your home. Once you’re done using these tips to design a welcoming guest space, you’ll want to get started on the other rooms.

Accent walls, paint jobs and blinds

Browse the internet to get some good ideas on how to create accent walls with the space you have. Accent walls are a cheap way to add interest. Paint the room a neutral colour and choose one wall to accent in a contrasting color of your choice. Don’t go too dark if the room is small as this will make it look even smaller. Then add an accent blind that complements your overall theme.

Blinds Direct has a selection of blinds, curtains and shutters to choose from that will make your guest bedroom stand out. Even maintaining the home theme won’t be a problem with the gorgeous choices available.

Decide on a style

It's best to maintain the same theme throughout your home. Traditional or eclectic caters for a lot of variety so a similar style doesn’t have to be boring. Focus on the ambience you want to create for your visitors, and then work around that. Because home space is at a premium, you’ll also want to ensure that your guest room can double as office space.

This is especially important if you only have visitors once in a while. Just make sure that any office or hobby goods can be quickly and neatly packed away without affecting the overall effect you’re aiming for.

Flooring

If you have wooden floors, refurbish these to maintain the authenticity of your room. Wooden flooring can be matched with any theme from the traditional to the super-modern because it is so versatile. If the room has old carpets, remove these. If you’re faced with a cement floor, cover this with wooden slats or faux wooden flooring. Wood immediately adds warmth, which is the ambiance you’re after.

Also, wooden floors can be dressed up with refurbished rugs obtained at charity stores. If the rug is in good condition, you may just find a winner. The only thing you’ll need to do is give it a professional clean.

Furnishings

At the very least, you will need a double bed. Complement this with a base set and headboard sourced from a second-hand store. In keeping with your wooden floors, a beautiful wooden or wrought iron set can double for a modern or traditional style.

Add pedestals to this and source eclectic side lamps to finish off the bed area. If you don’t have built-in cupboards, try to match the bed set. Install a collapsible, wall-mounted table that you can use as a desk or craft corner.

Art and accessories

Choose one or two good pieces of art, add a mirror, and include a plant in the room. Small art pieces can also often be found at thrift shops where you’re bound to find something that matches the décor.

Guests will always appreciate a mirror in the bedroom so that they don’t have to keep running to the bathroom when they need one.

Mirrors also help to achieve a sense of depth and space to a room, which adds another dimension to this welcoming space. Plants are beautiful living things, which further increase the sense of comfort that your guests will enjoy in this new room.
