Since it is the first day of spring, I am turning over a new leaf and jumping into this blogging “thingy.” I am giving up the excuse of being too busy to do this and as long as you don’t expect a post everyday (though my goal is several times a week) I hope this will work out well.
By way of introduction, if you haven’t looked up my profile already… I have had a pretty wide-ranging career in both consulting, public service and here at ITE in the professional association world. Like many of you, I have done a little bit of everything in traditional traffic engineering from traffic impact analysis to traffic calming studies to signal timing and in management of projects, proposals, business development, etc. I also have some more esoteric experience in subjects like special event management, travel forecasting and railroad/LRT schedule and track planning.
So in this space I will be sharing my point of view on a wide range of transportation topics mostly in transportation system management and operations (TSMO), public agency management and the profession as a whole. Don’t be surprised if it veers off from those subjects to streetcars or the latest cycle track design… I will warn you that I can be contrarian and progressive all at once – which drives some a little batty.
Please comment with your thoughts/opinion/experiences because through this discourse maybe my point of view will change and evolve...maybe yours will as well. I know it has throughout my career. Some items will be targeted to be a lead in for a discussion link, so you can provide attachments of examples and reports as appropriate.
I know some of you are pretty savvy with web tools. For those getting into it, my goal is to create some (hopefully) thoughtful discussion and, by example, to encourage you to blog here on the ITE Community as well.
Take care,
Doug
