We Need Your Input on Transit Priority Treatments

The Federal Transit Administration and the ITE Transit Council Seek Input on Transit Priority Treatments—Attend ITE Annual Meeting Sessions 4 and 8

Transit signal priority (TSP) and other transit priority techniques have been identified as cost-effective tools to improve safety and mobility while reducing energy consumption.

If applied properly, these treatments have the potential to reduce transit delay, improve service reliability and also provide significant benefits to non-transit traffic and other road users.

The effectiveness of TSP and other transit priority applications is, however, currently hindered by a lack of widespread knowledge of the benefits of these applications and resolution of specific technical challenges related to their integration with coordinated real-time traffic signal control systems.  It is proposed that barriers to successful application of transit priority techniques can be overcome by forming cooperative and collaborative partnerships among joint groups of transit and traffic engineering practitioners.

ITE is conducting two sessions at the 2011 ITE Annual Meeting in St. Louis, MO to initiate discussion on this topic.  Feedback received during these sessions will set the agenda for a future series of discussion sessions, workshops and/or Web seminars aimed at addressing this issue and fostering peer relationships between transit and traffic engineering professionals.

Please join us in Annual Meeting Sessions 4 and 8 to directly contribute to this important discussion.  We are seeking input from traffic engineers, transportation planners and transit professionals.
