National Traffic Incident Management Coalition has Final Meeting

On August 8, 2013, leaders from national transportation, law enforcement, fire, and towing organizations gathered for the last formal meeting of the National Traffic Incident Management Coalition (NTIMC). The NTIMC was formed in 2004 to promote the safe and efficient management of traffic incidents. The NTIMC established a multidisciplinary coalition of national organizations representing transportation, law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, public safety, communications, and towing and recovery communities.

NTIMC members have worked together to:

  • Promote state, regional, and local traffic incident management (TIM) programs;
  • Promote TIM standards, best practices, and performance measures; and
  • Promote TIM research.

In 2007, the NTIMC adopted the National Unified Goal (NUG) for TIM. The NUG encompasses a unified, national policy developed by major national organizations representing traffic incident responders under the NTIMC. The NUG has three major objectives:

  1. Responder safety;
  2. Safe, quick clearance;
  3. Prompt, reliable interoperable communications

Over the last year, FHWA has re-directed its resources on the launch and implementation of the TIM Executive Leadership Group (ELG), made up of national leaders in law enforcement, fire, transportation, towing, and recovery disciplines to advance the state of the practice across the nation. The ELG held its first meeting in December 2012; it has focused on helping national, governmental, and private-sector organizations institutionalize TIM programs, leadership, training, and good practices by transportation and public safety agencies. With this new direction, the National TIM Coalition would end operation in its current form, and its final meeting focused on developing the following action list, in the hopes that it will be able to continue under other sponsorship or in another venue, such as the National TIM Network or a group that addresses technical and operational issues.

The final report from the meeting will be posted here when available.
