Active audience participate contributed significantly to this panel discussion session that explored key issues, opportunities and challenges associated with the implementation of separated bikeways. This session highlighted the potential for separated bikeways to offer a positive means of increasing cycling mode share and safety for all users. The session also identified a need for more research on the safety considerations of separated bikeway facilities. Clear design guidance including recommendations on when and where facilities should be located is also lacking from existing guidance documents. Separated bikeways design must include consideration of all users including those with visual and mobility impairments in order to provide a safe and reliable transportation alternative.
