Innovative Intersection Design Sessions

This session provided overviews of projects using innovative intersection design and lessons learned from their implementation.

A common lesson learned was that there needs to be close communication and coordination with contractors and those directing traffic during periods when traffic and pedestrians are required to change their normal travel pattern. In some cases, projects benefitted from using temporary striping of new lanes as projects neared completion, as changes could be made before the final striping based upon reactions from drivers when the new intersections first opened.

FHWA has provided several tech memos on unconventional intersections, and these documents can be a valuable resource in determining whether an unconventional intersection will solve a certain challenge that a conventional intersection will not. For example, a median U-turn intersection can improve safety in certain situations where there is a wide median, although employing this type of intersection can have drawbacks for some of the users. Communication with the public is key so they understand the pros and cons of the new intersection. Whenever you can quantify the time savings for travelers, it helps make the case to the public for an unconventional intersection. You should not underestimate public concern with implementing new strategies, even when those strategies have significant benefits.
