ITE Recognizes Georgia DOT

During the opening plenary of the ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit, ITE International President Rock E. Miller read the following resolution that the ITE International Board of Direction passed recognizing the work of the Georgia Department of Transportation:

“Whereas the Georgia Department of Transportation has undertaken a number of innovative transportation management and operations initiatives for the benefit of the safety and mobility of Georgia’s transportation system users and

Whereas Georgia is the ninth ranked state by population and,

Whereas Metropolitan Atlanta ranks as the ninth largest metropolitan area in population in the United States and, whereas the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest in the world based on passengers, landings, and take-offs and continuing to grow at over 3 percent per annum and, whereas the growth of transportation demand and constrained funding has challenged the state in providing the necessary transportation system to adequately serve all users and that the department and their partner local and regional transportation agencies have undertaken the following:

  • Navigator 511 Program to provide real-time information on Georgia Highways
  • HERO-Highway Emergency Response Operators to minimize the disruption of traffic caused by lane-blocking incidents within the metro-Atlanta area
  • Regional Traffic Operations Program- a multijurisdictional, cutting-edge signal timing program with the goal of improving traffic flow and reducing vehicle emissions through improved signal timing
  • The continuing application of ITS technologies
  • 2012 Transportation Referendum that was voted on July 31 of this year to add a one percent regional sales tax to fund transportation improvements and provide an estimated $18.67 billion over a 10-year period

Now be it Resolved, that the International Board of Direction of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, in citing these examples as a sample of positive steps forward toward meeting the mobility and safety needs of all users of Georgia’s transportation system, commends the department and their partners for their program and the efforts of their staff.”

Rock presented a plaque commemorating the resolution to Todd Long, Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation, and Kathy Zahul, State Traffic Engineer, Georgia Department of Transportation.
