As we turn our thoughts away from this year’s International Annual Meeting and Exhibit, I hope you are doing well. If you were not in attendance at the gathering in Philadelphia with the Mid-Colonial District, you missed an incredible event! The technical sessions were excellent, the plenary sessions broadened our conversations, and the social and networking events were outstanding. In fact, I thought the plenary sessions were some of the best that we have ever conducted, with topics of great relevance that sparked outstanding conversations, especially for those employed by local agencies or working at this level of government. I encourage you to continue the conversations started at the Annual Meeting, read the pages of this issue of ITE Journal, and engage with those who attended. Ask questions and continue to learn.

“Creating safer, smarter mobility” was the theme of our gathering in Philadelphia. The meeting’s emphasis on transportation safety is a critical component of our recently adopted strategic plan for the next 3 years. This plan aims to elevate ITE’s leadership position in safety, and many of these efforts and initiatives were showcased at the meeting.

To achieve our goal and improve road safety, we must all work together to sustain and grow public trust, both within our associations and the broader community. Implementing strategies and changes in the built environment can be complex and requires tact and diplomacy. A multidisciplinary approach ensures comprehensive solutions that address various aspects of traffic safety and community well-being.

Over the past 8 months as ITE president, I have traveled to each ITE District meeting, visiting with ITE members—both professionals and students—as well as non-members in attendance. I was pleased to witness the enthusiasm of our members about the future of our community of transportation professionals and our work to enhance safety and mobility for all.

As we move towards the last quarter of 2024, our thoughts turn to planning activities and programs for 2025. Elections for new officers to lead the Districts and Sections will also be held. The growth of ITE starts at the grassroots level with activities and events conducted by Chapters and Sections across our Districts. As these planning processes commence, I encourage you to get involved, give input and feedback, and work to provide programs of interest to all individuals in your Chapter or Section.

It is important to broaden our horizons to gain greater understanding from each other, so we can advance our common goals and improve the quality of mobility in the communities where we work and live.

I continue to encourage you to fully leverage your ITE membership by taking advantage of the professional development opportunities, networking events, advocacy efforts, and best practices development. Let’s make the most of the remaining months of 2024 by heightening our engagement and collaboration within ITE. Stay safe and be well! TTFN
