M&O/ITS Council Changes Name

By Mr. Eric Rensel posted 03-17-2015 10:06 PM

Greetings, All.

I am very excited to tell you that as of March 16, 2015 the Management and Operations/Intelligent Transportation Systems (M&O/ITS) Council has changed its name to Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O).  This may seem like a subtle change to a few, but this has significant impact for the Institute.

Why Change?

Our world is continually changing and for transportation engineers this means less emphasis on capacity expansion and more emphasis on balanced investment in capacity preservation and efficient existing capacity use.  According to the Florida Department of Transportation “TSM&O is a program based on measuring performance, actively managing the multimodal transportation network, and delivering positive safety and mobility outcomes to the travelling public.” (http://www.dot.state.fl.us/trafficoperations/TSMO/TSMO-home.shtm).  Based on this definition, we feel that this name change will help our Council better align with the ITE Strategic Plan, with other Councils, and with the emerging needs of our ITE Family.

I was an M&O/ITS Member, am I a TSM&O member?

Yes.  The membership status has not changed for anyone that belonged to the M&O/ITS Council, you are still a part of the TSM&O Council.

I want to know more about TSM&O!

The Federal Highway Administration has published several documents on TSM&O.  One helpful one can be reviewed at this link: http://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/Publications/fhwahop12003/background.htm.

What is the TSM&O Council doing about TSM&O?

Our complete 2015 Strategic Action Plan is available for download in the ITE Community at this link: http://community.ite.org/communities/community-home/librarydocuments/viewdocument?DocumentKey=0a97f97d-4b4a-4808-bd34-d5e00581ecf6&tab=librarydocuments&CommunityKey=d80f883f-44d0-45da-b1ad-d7c86dad47e9.  At a high-level we are working towards the following objectives:

  • Audit existing TSM&O Council Activities
  • Fully integrate and welcome members of the Freight Standing Committee
  • Develop a framework between the TSM&O Council and the National Operations Center of Excellence
  • Develop a baseline for positioning ITE as the thought leader for Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Public Policy
  • Develop an ITE District, Chapter, and Section Outreach Plan

How can I get involved in the TSM&O Council?

It’s easy.  Join today by logging onto the ITE Community and joining our Council.  Contact Eric Rensel (erensel@gfnet.com) or Doug Gettman (doug.gettman@kimley-horn.com) and tell us what your passion is.
