As the school year begins, let's take a moment to reflect on some of the recent accomplishments of ITE Student Members.

At the ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit in St. Louis, MO USA last month, Brigham Young University took home the grand prize for the 2011 International Collegiate Traffic Bowl. Representing the Western District, competing team members Brad Brimley, Buffie Chau, Steven Dudley and alternate, Clancy Black had the correct final answer in the tournament, leading them to win 4,001 to 0 against the other two final teams, NC State University and University of Toronto.

Katerina Moreland, Graduate research assistant, transportation engineering at Clemson University was awarded the Daniel B. Fambro Student Paper Award for her paper titled “Transit System Evaluation Process: From Planningto Realization.” Ms. Moreland provided a unique approach to a very timely topic. By integrating planning, operations and performance measurement activities into a logical framework, Katerina identified ways of evaluating transit in context of overall mobility. A case study of the on-campus transit for Clemson Universitywas presented to model this framework of transit performance.

The University of Massachusetts–Amherst Student Chapter was selected as the recipient for the Student Chapter Award for the third consecutive year due to the volume, breadth and quality of activities undertaken. This chapter continues to dedicate efforts toward the goal of introducing traffic engineering to the broader student body by including two officers specifically tasked to reach out to various student populations.Further, they reached out to other groups on campus, including ASCE and WTS, to establish partnerships with these groups that they hope to carry forward to their professional careers. They have an outstanding technical program, perform substantial community service, and participate in numerous meetings of various ITE groups as well as other organizations.
