Todd Long, P.E., PTOE (M) is the Georgia Division Transportation Lead for Atlas Technical Consultants, LLC (formerly Moreland Altobelli Associates) in Duluth, GA, USA. Todd also serves as an adjunct faculty at Georgia Institute of Technology.

My connection to Todd came while attending the Southern District (SDITE) Board meetings. Todd has served as an officer of the Georgia Section and Southern District and is the current Past President of the Southern District. He is an unassuming, collaborative, and humble leader who is great to work with. Through his work and with ITE, Todd lives his commitment to improving customer service, efficiency, and management services. I’m impressed with his approach to performance measures for a volunteer organization and it is clear ITE is lucky to have Todd in our corner. Todd asks great questions and encourages people to share their ideas and opinions. During one of our meetings he asked, “What do you wish you knew about leadership that would make you more effective?” Todd and the executive leadership of SDITE listened carefully, taking the ideas and converting them into actionable highlights, including mentorship, conflict resolution, succession planning, and negotiating. The Southern District has recognized Todd for his leadership by awarding him the John F. Exnicios Government Employee Outstanding Service Award. His focus is on helping to serve, direct, mentor, and nurture young engineers.

Todd got started in his transportation career early. As a youngster, his interest in maps and networks led him toward transportation and Georgia Tech where he received his bachelor’s and master’s in civil engineering. He wrote his master’s thesis on a case study of attempts to stifle cut-through traffic in a Roswell neighborhood in Fulton County. His career began with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) where he progressed through nine positions to become the first GDOT Planning Director and then later Deputy Commissioner. Through his 25 years of service at GDOT, Todd left an indelible fingerprint on the state’s transportation system and an enhanced quality of life for many people. After retiring from GDOT, Todd became the COO of Fulton County and helped with the passage of $600 million in transportation sales taxes and the adoption of Fulton County’s Master Transit Plan.

If you get the chance to meet Todd, you will quickly find yourself immersed in a conversation about transportation and experience his passion. While he is the son, brother, nephew, and husband of engineers, his planning skills have served him well over his career. You can chat with him about his students that attend his Georgia Tech graduate class. He has plenty of interests to share with you. Beyond being a great professional, Todd devotes time to his family and church. He models what it means to successfully Shape Your Community.
