The Next Step Forward in Trip Generation

By Mr. Jeffrey Paniati P.E posted 07-09-2022 11:23 PM

At the upcoming ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibition in New Orleans, ITE, PTV Group, and Transoft Solutions will be debuting the latest advancement in ITE’s trip generation efforts, a new applications programming interface (API) that supports integration between the ITE TripGen11 app and third-party traffic engineering software.

Since the release of the first Trip Generation Manual (TGM) in the 1970s, ITE has been the industry leader for transportation impact analysis resources. Over the last 5 years, we have been on a journey to modernize our trip generation offerings. With the release of the TGM 10th Edition in 2017, ITE took a major step forward by including urban, person-based trips for the first time, and—with the support of our software partner Transoft Solutions—releasing the new ITE TripGen10 app. This app moved the TGM from a static, paper-based product to an interactive software tool, allowing the user access to the TGM data base and the ability to sort and access the data in a variety of ways.

In 2020, ITE added the TripGen Educator’s Guide, providing lesson plans and discounted access for university professors and students to support the early introduction of trip generation principles and tools to the next generation of transportation professionals. In early 2020, the 10th Edition TGM Supplement was released, significantly enhancing the 10th Edition with the addition of robust multimodal trip data. Later in 2020, the 8-week certificate-based blended learning Transportation Impact Analysis Training Program was offered for the first time. This course sold-out immediately, and has been offered each spring and fall since, selling out well in advance each time.

In September 2021, the 11th Edition of the TGM was released, adding new data, addressesing a wide range of user feedback through the addition of new land uses and improvements in the functionality of the TripGen app, and establishing a new pricing structure for multi-user environments.

Building from the TripGen11 app, ITE is now announcing the availability of the TripGen11 API. This offering allows third-party traffic engineering software providers to link their products directly to the ITE TripGen11 app, and gives users the ability to extract data needed for analysis. The integration between these software tools will provide users with a more seamless experience and improve efficiency. ITE is pleased to partner with the PTV Group on the first implementation of this API through the Vistro traffic engineering software (more information on page 16). We appreciate the spirit of cooperation from both PTV and Transoft Solutions in the development and implementation of the API. I would
like to thank Transoft for their continued support for ITE, and recognize the leadership of ITE staff members Kevin Hooper and Lisa Fontana Tierney.

This most recent accomplishment is just another step forward toward continually improving and supporting transportation impact analysis. We recently published the proposed Multimodal Transportation Impact Analysis Recommended Practice and are currently working with a team of experts to chart the next frontier for our trip generation efforts. Stay tuned for more innovation to come. As always, you can contact me on the ITE e-Community or on Twitter: @JeffPaniatiITE.
