In my last blog back in October, I discussed the importance of sustainability of the transportation network and the role we as transportation professionals have in advancing that sustainability.  Part of that sustainability lies in providing safe and efficient facilities for non-motorized, or human-powered travel.  Offering mobility opportunities for pedestrians and bicyclists is the cornerstone of this effort.  The Pedestrian and Bicycle Standing Committee represents and promotes these system users in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of an infrastructure that is inclusive of all modes.

As a standing committee under the Complete Streets Council, the Ped/Bike Standing Committee serves as a cross-cutting resource between other organizations and agencies on pedestrian and bicycle matters; and educates ITE membership, agencies, organizations, and policy-makers on the needs of the pedestrian and bicycle communities.  Through volunteer efforts and collaborations with other Councils, the Ped/Bike Committee has produced numerous products to the benefit of our members.  These include:

• Alternative Treatments for At-Grade Pedestrian Crossings,
• Innovative Bicycle Treatments,
• Protected Bikeways Practitioner Guide and Lecture Series, and
• Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety in Parking Facilities.

 The Ped/Bike Committee has a number of goals that direct their activities.  These include:

1. Involving ITE members in the activities of the Committee.
2. Aiding ITE membership in addressing the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists in their work.
3. Promoting development of comprehensive transportation infrastructure, inclusive of all modes of travel.
4. Identifying unmet needs of pedestrian/bicycle professionals.
5. Developing solutions to meet those needs and communicate outcomes.
6. Extending information beyond the borders of ITE to include the broadest possible range of practitioners.
7. Serving as a cross-cutting resource between other organizations and agencies on pedestrian and bicycle matters.
8. Encouraging cooperation with other organizations and agencies to address the needs of the pedestrian and bicycle communities.
9. Educating ITE membership, agencies, organizations, and policy-makers on the needs of the pedestrian and bicycle communities. 
10. Conducting, sponsoring, and reviewing research regarding pedestrian and bicycle transportation.
