Time: Noon Eastern/11am Central/10am Mountain/9am Pacific

Description:

Environmental Sensor Stations (ESS) are ground -based or pole mounted sensors that collect base level raw weather data from roadways sections or region and transmit data to a central or field location where they are used as part of a Road Weather Information System (RWIS).

The focus of this updated module is to assist technical staff in specifying clear requirements from the list of requirements that exist in NTCIP 1204 v04 ESS and meeting identified user needs. This module will continue to provide participants with information on how to identify the appropriate use of the NTCIP 1204 v04 standard and acquire a ESS system based on what the user is seeking to accomplish as identified by tracing the user needs to the requirements with support from tools and resources such as a RTM and PRL in following a systems engineering process. Focus is placed on RTM and how to prepare a project level RTM for ESS specification. The module will review the pros and cons of selecting requirements not covered by the standard and the need to avoid an orphaned user need or requirement for a system.

Target Audience:

  • Engineering staff
  • TMC/operations staff
  • System developers
  • Device manufacturers
  • Private and public sectors
  • Users (Clarus Initiative, public safety)
  • Winter maintenance and operation personnel
Learning Objectives:
1. Review the structure of the standard

2. Use the PRL and RTM to specify the standardized structure of requirements:

3. Use the RTM to specify the standardized design

4. How to specify requirements not covered by the standard

5. Infer the relationship between selecting requirements and testing
