Don't miss either of the following Complete Streets webinars hosted by ITE in June & July! Learn about how cities have implemented and benefited from these projects financially and in terms of increased safety.

ITE webinars are a perfect opportunity to broaden or enhance your skill set without having to leave your office. Most webinars also offer PDHs to help you meet professional licensing and certification renewal requirements.

Planning for Complete Streets: Case Studies Webinar - Tuesday, June 16, 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. ET

Sponsored by the Transportation Planning Council and the Complete Streets Council, this webinar showcases different cities' policies, plans, and projects completed in the United States to improve their streets and communities through transportation.

Learn how a very large auto-centric city like Phoenix has taken great strides in implementing a more balanced transportation system through a complete streets program along with the phased process of getting it adopted and some of the challenges faced. Learn how Bellingham, WA, moved away from auto-centric to multimodal performance measures and evolved from a "complete streets" to a "complete networks" approach to transportation planning; and is transforming a major auto-oriented arterial (20,000 vpd) into an inclusive multimodal corridor with various pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicle safety improvements.

Learning Objective(s):

  • Discuss the role planners and transportation engineers can play in passing and implementing Complete Streets policies and how stakeholder coalitions can support these efforts.
  • Recognize the role of city staff in the Complete Streets process.
  • Identify the strong link needed between public transit and streets with the local and federal transit-oriented development planning initiatives.

Safety Benefits of Complete Streets Webinar - Tuesday, July 9, 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. ET

The report "Safer Streets, Stronger Economies" by Smart Growth America's National Complete Streets Coalition surveyed Complete Streets projects from across the country and found 37 with transportation and/or economic data available from both before and after the project. The data showed that streets were usually safer after Complete Streets improvements. In the majority of cases, collision rates and injuries declined after Complete Streets projects were built. These safety improvements have real financial value as well.

This webinar will examine how Complete Streets projects cost significantly less than conventional transportation projects, yet can still deliver transportation benefits like better safety performance and encourage more multimodal travel. More than 700 towns, cities, counties, regions, and states have made official commitments to these practices by passing Complete Streets policies. This webinar will provide a real-life case study from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Learning Objective(s):

  • Discuss how Complete Streets projects tend to reduce collisions, injuries, and speed after their redesign.
  • Identify other benefits of Complete Streets, such as stronger economies, expansion of multimodal travel, and reduced project costs.
