The Share Economy and emerging related transportation options have been a hot topic among transportation professionals. Shared Mobility is the term being used to describe the shared use of a vehicle, bicycle, or other mode. 

ITE is offering the following new resources related to the topic of Shared Mobility. They all have in common Dr. Susan Shaheen, an internationally recognized leader in innovative mobility research, focused on carsharing, bikesharing, and ridesharing.

In this second ITE Talks Transportation Podcast episode, Susan Shaheen, Ph.D. discusses shared mobility and how the business models in this transportation delivery segment will continue to evolve. Susan is an internationally recognized leader in innovative mobility research, focused on carsharing, bikesharing, and ridesharing. She is an adjunct professor of civil and environmental engineering, co-director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC), and director of Innovative Mobility Research. Shared Mobility— Current Practices and Guiding Principles Webinar Recording

This webinar will delve into the current practice of Shared Mobility services, by providing an overview of activity, challenges for local public agencies, and lessons learned. In addition, the role of the public sector will be discussed and some guiding principles identified to help support the shared mobility as a transportation service on our cities. The webinar will be based on recent work done by the Federal Highway Administration and feature three notable experts: Dr. Susan Shaheen, of the University of California at Berkeley; Timothy Papandreou, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency; and Kathleen Garman, City of Kansas City, Missouri. Also participating in this webinar, Wayne Berman of FHWA and Ismail Zohdy of Booz Allen Hamilton.

Sharing is Caring: What Does the Future of the Sharing Economy Look Like for Transportation Providers? (Monday, August 15, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.)

Developed in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration Office of Operations
There has been a rapid expansion of shared mobility services – carsharing, bikesharing, and transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft. Coined as “disruptive technologies,” these and other innovative services challenge existing regulatory structures but enjoy growing popularity and usage within communities. The result is conflict with local regulators, policy makers, and existing transportation services.  This session provides insight into the many dimensions of these new services and how to embrace and effectively integrate them into existing transportation systems.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key facets of the sharing economy that affect the community, transportation providers, public agencies, and consultants.
  • Describe methods to effectively utilize and integrate sharing economy technologies into existing systems
