Remembering Past ITE International President John D. Edwards Jr.

By Ms. Michelle Birdsall posted 02-22-2016 04:22 PM

ITE is saddened to share news of the recent loss of John D. Edwards, Jr., P.E., who passed away on February 19, 2016.

Sean Coleman, 2016 GAITE President, shared the following about John:

"An honorary and life member of ITE, John was a founding member of the Georgia Section of ITE (GAITE), which he helped establish and served as its first president in 1963. He then went on to be the first Georgia member to serve as International ITE President in 1985.

John was an amazing man, father, and engineer, and he was always full of encouragement and words of affirmation for many of those who served on the GAITE Board. He gave so much to the Section and to the profession, and GAITE would not be as strong as it is today without his leadership and dedication.

The Edwards' family has asked that GAITE solicit donations to the GAITE Scholarship Fund to honor John's contributions to our Section. Donations can be made here, or you can visit our Scholarship page on the GAITE website.  Please put "John Edwards" when prompted from Paypal to "State your desired use for the funds".

Furthermore, if any of his friends and colleagues from GAITE would like to share stories at his service, please let his son and GAITE member Brad Edwards know.  The details of the service are not clear at this point, but the service will most likely be on Monday or Tuesday and we will provide details to the membership as soon as we find out.

Read more about John's contributions to traffic engineering and to ITE here: John Edwards ITE Biography."

John will also be remembered in the April issue of ITE Journal.

I worked with John on a number of projects early in my career. He was one of those "bigger than life" professionals that inspired and encouraged young engineers like me. He will be missed.
