Future of the MUTCD

By Mr. Jeffrey Paniati P.E posted 02-03-2016 04:03 PM

On December 22nd, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued a Request for Comment on the future direction of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). ITE views the MUTCD as a critical resource to ensuring the mobility and safety of our citizens and has a strong and active interest in working with FHWA to keep this document current and relevant.

Through this link you'll find a letter from ITE International President Paula Flores Benway outlining ITE's response to this request for comment. This letter stresses the importance of ensuring the MUTCD is accessible by more than just transportation professionals and the need for the MUTCD to be adaptable to the changing world of transportation we find ourselves in today. Also in this link are the results of an ITE member survey used to establish the core of our response.

I encourage you to review the request for comments and consider submitting your own comments by the February 18, 2016 deadline.

Read and comment on the Request for Comment here:http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FHWA_FRDOC_0001-1260

It is my intent to continue to keep you informed of relevant requests for input from our key federal partners to ensure our voice is heard on issues that which will affect the future of our profession.
