During the Transportation Research Board’s Annual Meeting in January, the Institute of Transportation (ITE) hosted a reception for ITE student members at the Institute’s headquarters office in Washington, DC, USA. Students members networked and socialized with the ITE International Board of Directors, ITE staff, and their peers while learning more about what ITE has to offer students and young professionals. There were more than 80 students attending from 19 universities. Clemson University was represented by the largest delegation, with ten students attending. The next largest groups were from the University of Toronto, Canada; the University of New Brunswick, Canada; and the University of Texas, Austin, all with six students each. Student member Adelia Nataadmadja traveled the furthest to attend, coming from New Zealand where she is a student at Auckland University.

The reception provided students with an opportunity to engage ITE leaders in a question and answer session  about how ITE is working to support and bolster its student chapters while helping to support their transition from school to the workplace. The role of volunteerism and the many rewards stemming from being part of a volunteer organization were discussed by leaders who began their own relationships with ITE and the profession as student members. Upcoming opportunities for continued student networking include the ITE Traffic Bowl competitions, the second ITE Student Leadership Summit being held February 13-15, 2015 in Sacramento, CA, USA, and the joint ITE and Young Professionals in Transportation reception being held in Hollywood, FL, USA during the ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit. Students are encouraged to continue and deepen their involvement in ITE through activities such as these and to take advantage of the opportunity to connect with many mentors through the Institute.
