ITE Seeks Volunteer Reviewers for the Transportation Planning Handbook, 4th Edition

By Ms. Lisa Fontana Tierney P.E posted 04-10-2014 06:02 PM

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) has kicked off an effort to develop a new edition of the Transportation Planning Handbook (TPH). Transportation planning practice continues to advance and broaden in scope as new issues emerge and technologies evolve. The 4th Edition of the Handbook aims to update the previous edition by addressing a number of key changes facing the profession. In particular, the new edition will include increased focus on serving the needs of all users, the role of safety in the planning process, and transportation planning in the context of societal concerns. Further, a new structure for content of the Handbook is intended to promote a more functionally driven multimodal approach to planning, designing, and implementing transportation solutions.

ITE is soliciting subject matter experts to serve as volunteer reviewers for the content of the draft chapters that will comprise the new Transportation Planning Handbook. We are looking for reviewers who have extensive practical experience in transportation planning specific to the subject matter and represent a mix of academicians, public and private sector practitioners in varied geographic locations.

The following chapters are currently available for review:
- (1) Introduction to Transportation Planning
- (2) Travel Characteristics and Data
- (3) Land Use and Urban Design
- (4) Environmental Considerations in the Transportation Planning Process
- (8) Transportation Asset Management
An additional solicitation will be prepared for the remaining chapters upon completion.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
If you are interested in serving as a volunteer reviewer, please submit a brief "statement of interest" providing your unique qualifications for up to two chapter topics from the list above and a one-page resume documenting your professional background and practical experience applicable to this work. All submittals must be accompanied with your complete contact information.

Please submit the requested items and any questions to Courtney Day (
cday@ite.org) no later than Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

The goal is to have 3-5 volunteer reviewers per chapter who will be able to provide a comprehensive review. All selected reviewers will participate in a two-week review period in May 2014 and will be acknowledged for their work upon the completion of the effort in late 2014.
