ITE Seeks Volunteer Reviewers for the Traffic Engineering Handbook, 7th Edition

By Ms. Lisa Fontana Tierney P.E posted 04-10-2014 05:54 PM

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) has kicked off an effort to develop a new edition of the Traffic Engineering Handbook (TEH). This update includes a significant departure from prior editions in terms of its structure, organization, and presentation of the content. Among the most significant of these changes is the move away from traditional automobile-centric approaches to traffic engineering. In this new edition, transportation engineering and planning principles are presented as tools to meet broader societal needs to facilitate the safe and efficient movement of all road users. In addition, this Handbook integrates contemporary approaches to traffic engineering and planning including context-sensitive solutions, resiliency, environmental sensitivity, system reliability, and sustainability.

ITE is soliciting subject matter experts to serve as volunteer reviewers for the content of the draft chapters that will comprise the new Traffic Engineering Handbook. We are looking for reviewers who have extensive practical experience in traffic engineering specific to the subject matter and represent a mix of academicians, public and private sector practitioners in varied geographic locations.

The following chapters are currently in development:
- (1) Introduction to Traffic Engineering
- (2) Probability and Statistics
- (3) Road User Environment
- (4) Traffic Engineering Studies
- (5) Concept of LOS and Multimodal Environment
- (6) Forecasting and Managing Travel Demand
- (7) Traffic Flow Characteristics
- (8) Design and Operations of Road Segments and Interchanges in Rural Areas
- (9) Design and Operations of Road Segments and Interchanges in Urban Areas
- (10) Design and Operations of Road Segments and Intersections in Multimodal Traffic Streams
- (11) Access Management
- (12) Parking
- (13) Traffic Calming
- (14) Maintenance and Construction Staging
- (15) Traffic Management During Planned and Unplanned Emergency Events

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
If you are interested in serving as a volunteer reviewer, please submit a brief "statement of interest" providing your unique qualifications for up to two chapter topics from the list above and a one-page resume documenting your professional background and practical experience applicable to this work. All submittals must be accompanied with your complete contact information.

Please submit the requested items and any questions to Courtney Day at Cday@ite.org no later than Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

The goal is to have 3-5 volunteer reviewers per chapter who will be able to provide a comprehensive review. All selected reviewers will participate in a two-week review period in June 2014 and will be acknowledged for their work upon the completion of the effort in late 2014.
