The competition of the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl Grand Championship was recently renewed for the 5th annual edition on August 12th in Seattle, Washington, USA. Student teams from across the United States and Canada participated in heated competition at the 2014 Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Annual Meeting and Exhibit.

The ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl is a competition amongst ITE student chapter teams with transportation planning and engineering topics for the clues, questions, and answers.  In its sixth year, the Collegiate Traffic Bowl Program has grown to feature the participation of student teams from 63 of 149 universities with ITE student chapters in the United States and Canada. These teams compete in section and district-level events for a chance to compete in the Grand Championship. More than 200 student members of ITE comprised the teams that competed in 2014. Overall 66% of all student chapters in the US and Canada have participated in at least one traffic bowl since 2009.

The District Champion teams that competed in Seattle were:

  • University of Massachusetts-Amherst (4th appearance)

  • Penn State University (3rd appearance)

  • Purdue University (2nd appearance)

  • University of Kansas (2nd appearance)

  • Clemson University (1st appearance)

  • Brigham Young University (3rd appearance, 2011 Champion)

  • University of Toronto (3rd appearance)

  • University of Texas at Austin (1st appearance)

  • University of Florida (4th appearance, 2013 Champion)

In an outstanding effort that was decided by the final clue, the University of Texas team was declared the 2014 Grand Champion and received the $2,000 (US) prize. The defending champion University of Florida and Penn State University also advanced to the championship round and finish second and third respectively. It was also Penn State’s second consecutive year in the final match! In the semi-finals, four tiebreakers were needed to propel Texas into the finals over UMass.

All of the teams participating in the Grand Championship received, from ITE, a travel grant of $2,000 (US) and complimentary student registrations to participate in the International Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Seattle.

The objectives of the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl are to encourage students to become more active members in ITE, to enhance their knowledge of the traffic/transportation engineering and planning profession and of ITE itself, and to strengthen the programs of the ITE student chapters.

Plans have already begun for the 2015 ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl Program with the Grand Championship to be conducted during the ITE International Annual Meeting and Exhibit to be held August 2-5, 2015 in Hollywood, Florida, USA. To qualify for the Grand Championship, a team must first compete and win their district’s traffic bowl. For more information, be sure to visit ITE’s website at www.ite.org or the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl Group on the ITE Community.
