Are you an engineer in the public or private sector who analyzes, designs, or operates traffic control devices such as traffic signs, pavement markings, and highway traffic signals?  If so, then take a closer look at this upcoming webinar, MUTCD: Can the Current Process Keep Pace with the Demand for Change. And Should It?, being held on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, 12-1:30pm ET.

As community building trends shift, designers and traffic engineers are required to accommodate the needs of all users of the transportation system. These design and operational changes present interesting challenges for our system of signs, markings, and signals.

Panelists during this webinar will discuss if we can develop the new system using the consensus standards building process. They will identify the steps necessary to assure needed communication/collaboration among MUTCD users and stakeholders that will provide accurate and credible traffic control and operations, and fulfill road user expectations.

Meet the Panelists and find out what they will be covering:

To begin, Bruce Friedman, P.E., Transportation Specialist on the MUTCD Team in the Office of Transportation Operations at FHWA, will describe the evolution of the MUTCD, the Federal rulemaking process, the estimated time line for the next edition, and the process of adding or using new devices or application between editions.
Tom Hicks, Director of Business Development for Century Engineering, will review the technical evolution of the MUTCD over the years from the standpoint of providing operational efficiency and safety for all road users along the Nation's road systems.

Liz Babson, Deputy Directory for the Charlotte Department of Transportation, will highlight Charlotte's experience in applying the MUTCD, providing examples where they have used the interim approval process and experimentation to install new traffic control devices not currently in the manual. She will also discuss shifting preferences of citizens for a more walkable and bicycle friendly community and the need for FHWA to consider offering more flexibility in ways to use new devices so more communities have access to them.
Rock Miller, Senior Principal with Stantec Consulting with nearly 40 years of experience in Traffic Engineering with emphasis in safety, signal systems, and performance, will provide examples of why the current process needs to change to support the users of the MUTCD.
