About HSIS
The Highway Safety Information System (HSIS) is a roadway-based system that contains crash, roadway inventory, and traffic volume data for a select group of seven States and one municipality.  FHWA uses the HSIS data to support the FHWA safety research program and provide input for program policy decisions. FHWA has used HSIS data to analyze a large number of safety problems. These safety problems can range from the more basic "problem identification" issues to identifying the size and extent of a safety problem to modeling efforts that attempt to predict future crashes from roadway characteristics and traffic factors. A primary objective of the HSIS program is to make data available to professionals and students who are conducting road safety research and plan to publish their results.  Results from completed studies have been used to develop new safety policies, establish better safety practices, and enhance decision-making for safety improvement resources. Over the past 5 years, the project has received approximately 25 requests each year for HSIS data from faculty and students across the country. Awareness and marketing of the HSIS Data Contest will increase this number. For more information about HSIS, visit hsisinfo.org.
