The STAR Communities recently announced that the City of Seattle was awarded a 5-STAR Community Rating for national leadership in sustainability. According to the press release, Seattle achieved the highest score to date and is only the second in the nation to achieve the 5-STAR rating. This high-rating was due in part to its efforts in transportation, noting "Transportation Choices: Seattle is one of only five cities in the nation where less than half of commuters are driving alone to work. Since 2011, Seattle has seen a 59% increase in bicycling and a 27% increase in pedestrian traffic."

STAR Communities advances a national framework for sustainable communities through the delivery of standards and tools built by and for local governments and the communities they serve. The organization administers the STAR Community Rating System, a framework and certification program for local sustainability.  To view Seattle's full report go to: http://www.starcommunities.org/communities/31-seattle-washington
