Trip Generation in the Cloud

By Ms. Michelle Birdsall posted 03-05-2012 07:24 PM

This Monday afternoon session discussed the official launch of Trip Generation in the Cloud, which will take place at the end of March 2012. An exciting new collaborative development, this SaaS based application will take Trip Generation into the next generation. OTiSS, an Online Traffic Impact Study Software application, permits the use of ITE trip generation data to aid in traffic impact assessments. Trip Generation and TIA is the first cloud based application of its kind.

Milton Carrasco, President and CEO of Transoft Solutions, Inc. discussed how you can complete your trip generation analysis and key elements of your TIAs on the cloud. In close collaboration with ITE, OTiSS, the first and unique cloud-based application, takes the manual and spreadsheet process into the cloud and puts more power in the hands of its user. When the software is officially released at the end of this month, ITE and Transoft Solutions will provide an official announcement and Webinar on its use.

Also during this session, Jina Mahmoudi, Planning and Engineering Projects Director for the Institute of Transportation Engineers discussed what’s new in the upcoming 9th Edition of Trip Generation. Scheduled to be released in August 2012, the ninth edition of Trip Generation will include approximately 15 new land uses and data from over 400 new studies. While the initial launch of the software application will be for the 8th edition of Trip Generation, the 9th edition information will be incorporated into the electronic version when it becomes available.

The ITE Booth at the Annual Meeting had a tremendous response with many attendees, from State Agencies to large and small consulting agencies stopping by to enquire about OTISS! Many are looking at multi-user subscriptions - ready to join the dozens of users now on-lie with OTISS.
A particular hit of the software is the ability to store, manage and work with 'private' data, the exceptions reporting and other capabilities. Development of the software in continuing and new improvements will be added frequently .... so keep a close watch at the website - www.otisstraffic.com.
Thanks for all of you that stopped by! Milton Carrasco

I just saw Milton's presentation and the first thing I thought of is what Gary has already asked. I'd love a mobile version, even if it has more limited capabilities. I didn't see Tom Brahms' response to Gary's question, though.

Hi Gary,
I believe Tom Brahms already responded to your question. Thanks!

Gary, I'm going to have Jina Mahmoudi address your question. Thanks! Michelle

Does anyone know if their will be an API available from ITE so other software companies can access the Trip Generation Data implemented in the 9th Edition? I'd love to be able to acces it and provide it for iOS and Android with an advertisement based business model where the data is provided free to everyone. Regards, Gary www.trafdata.com

Hi Bradley. You couldn't have scripted the direction of the this software any better! Just be patient and watch this software become the ultimate in TIA projects. "Version 1.0" is scheduled to be launched in late March or early April. In the Transoft spirit of development, you will not be disappointed, however as always not all the bells and whistles will be in place in this first version - and more mportantly, we are collaborating closely with ITE to ensure that everything we do is in keeping with ITE's recommeded practises - they are the knowledge experts. Thanks for your comments.

I have been hoping for a while that the ITE Trip Generation resources would go online! This seems like the ideal way to have the most current trip generation data at our fingertips. An online platform also lends itself to the development of a robust tool that allows users to filter the trip generation data based on user-selected characteristics (e.g., land use, square-foot range, adjacent land uses or development patterns, year the data was collected, proximity to transit, geographic location such as the state or region of the country/world, etc.) and then use the selected data set to provide the engineer with recommended trip rates, regression equations, and even a regression chart like in the current Trip Generation manual (i.e., as an output page that can be inserted into the appendix and that documents all of the filters). Is this the direction that the software is going?
